Stewed gizzards win good food prize

Bookmark and Share
ATSUGI, Kanagawa Prefecture--Kofu's succulent torimotsu-ni stewed gizzards won the fifth annual B-1 Grand Prix for local foods from around the country.
The stewed chicken gizzards and offal cooked in a sweet and spicy sauce snared the most ballots--or chopsticks--at the two-day "B-class gourmet" event, which drew a record 435,000 connoisseurs of cheap but tasty local fare Saturday and Sunday (Sep 18 & 19, 2010).

It was the first time the dish, a favorite at noodle shops in the capital of Yamanashi Prefecture, was entered in competition at the event, which brought together a total 46 entries from 24 prefectures stretching from Hokkaido to Kyushu.

"By winning this award and luring tourists to visit, we are giving people something they can be proud of in their city," said a 37-year-old Kofu city official who led the group that came up with the winning recipe.

He said they took two years to come up with the perfect combination. While the ingredients and recipe are simple, the hard part is getting the "harmony of texture" right every time, the man said.

Second prize also went to a first-time entry. A group from Maniwa, Okayama Prefecture, was runner-up with its hiruzen yakisoba, stir-fried noodles with chicken and cabbage flavored with miso paste.

The one-two surprise finish left a group from Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, disappointed and in third place, as its Hachinohe senbei-jiru, or hotpot stew served with rice crackers, had until last year come in second for three consecutive years.

Fourth place was awarded to Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture, for its Tsuyama horumon udon, or udon noodles with chitterlings, and fifth to Miura, Kanagawa Prefecture, for its Misaki maguro ramen, or noodles topped with sliced tuna.

Sixth to 10th place were: Toyokawa inarizushi of Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture; Kuroishi tsuyuyakisoba of Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture; Towada barayaki of Towada, Aomori Prefecture; Mishima croquettes of Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture; and Okhotsk Kitami shioyakisoba of Kitami, Hokkaido.
