U.S. President Barack Obama will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Thursday on the sidelines of U.N. meetings in New York, the White House said Friday. Obama will also hold bilateral talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the same day, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told a press conference. Kan and Obama are expected to discuss a wide range of bilateral and global issues such as the planned relocation of a U.S. base in Okinawa Prefecture. (AP)
Oshio sentenced to 30 months in prison over woman's drug-linked death

Actor Manabu Oshio was sentenced to 30 months in prison Friday for giving a girlfriend the synthetic drug MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, and failing to act properly when the woman became gravely ill and died after taking the drug with him last year. The defense counsel of Oshio, the first celebrity to be dried under the new lay judge system launched last year, filed an appeal of the guilty verdict with a higher court. A panel of three professional and six citizen judges at the Tokyo District Court gave the penalty to Oshio, 32, who was charged with violating the narcotics control law and the Penal Code for giving the drug to her and abandoning his responsibility for protection that resulted in her death. Hakuho made history on Saturday, becoming the only wrestler in postwar Japan to win 54 consecutive bouts, putting him past former yokozuna great Chiyonofuji (53) on the seventh day of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament. In the day's finale, Hakuho absorbed a hard charge from Kisenosato, slipping slightly on the dirt before recovering nicely to send the komusubi packing with a series of shoves to extend his run that started on the 14th day of the New Year meet. Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who survived a bruising leadership challenge this week, named a new cabinet Friday, including a new foreign minister to handle an escalating row with China. The shake-up in ministerial and party posts also aims to stamp Kan's authority on his year old centre-left government and effectively sidelines his vanquished rival, Ichiro Ozawa, in the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). On the economic front, where the Kan government Wednesday launched a massive currency intervention to stem the damaging rise of the yen, Kan bet on continuity and kept in place his Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda. Japan gov't mulls increasing funds for forex intervention

The Japanese government is considering expanding a pool of funds reserved for stepping into the foreign exchange market, a move seen as preparation for a long period of yen-selling intervention, sources close to the matter said Thursday. The nation's monetary authorities, which intervened in the market Wednesday for the first time in more than six years, declined to comment on whether their operation has entered a second day. They sold an estimated amount of between 1.7 trillion yen and 1.8 trillion yen on Wednesday, pushing the dollar up by about 3 yen to the 85 yen range. (AP)

Singer Tashiro arrested again over narcotics

Police arrested entertainer Masashi Tashiro early Thursday after patrol officers allegedly found him in possession of cocaine in a Yokohama port parking lot. Tashiro's arrest, on suspicion of violating the narcotics control law, was his third in connection with illegal drugs. Police also arrested Chieko Arai, 50, a beauty parlor operator from Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, who was with the 54-year-old Tashiro, for possessing stimulant drugs. (Japan Times)
