 Sony, the Japanese electronics group, is to launch two new low-cost electronic book readers on Wednesday aimed at broadening the market for digital reading devices and challenging Amazon's Kindle readers in the US market. Sony's Reader Pocket Edition comes with a 5-inch screen, is designed to fit easily in a pocket or purse, can store about 350 books and will cost $199 while the Reader Touch Edition has a larger touch-sensitive screen and will cost about $299.

 Sanyo is addressing the space issue in cities such as Tokyo with a new model of folding bicycle. The CY-SPJ220 is a rather small device with 20-inch tires. It folds in half for fitting into elevators and stowing in apartment foyers or on balconies. The bike weighs just 18 1/2 kg, making it portable. Sanyo is promoting it as part of a "micro park-and-ride concept."

 Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. and some other organizations plan to jointly develop a next-generation optical disc that can store 25 times more data than a Blu-ray Disc, with the aim of putting the technology into practical use in 2012, industry sources said Monday. The next-generation one terabyte (1,000 gigabyte) disc will be designed to complement cloud computing, which allows for the storage of data and information offline on interconnected databases. It also would increase the efficiency of personal computers.
Aug 04 Man gets 2-1/2 years over Nintendo downloads (Yomiuri)
 The Kyoto District Court sentenced a company worker of Neyagawa, Osaka Prefecture, to 2-1/2 years in prison and fined him 2 million yen on Monday for violating the Copyright Law by enabling people to download copies of Nintendo's game console software for profit last year. Presiding Judge Junichi Tochigi said Yoshiaki Asagiri, 38, had infringed on the rights of the copyright owner, which had spent a massive amount of money to produce the product, causing the firm serious financial damage.

 BeeTV, a broadcast service for cell phones, is grabbing the spotlight in the mobile phone industry with aggressive promotions and original content featuring popular TV stars. More than 550,000 people have signed up between May, when NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Avex Group Holdings launched the service, and July 21.

 Applications for the "eco-point" system, which Japan has introduced to stimulate purchases of more energy-efficient electric appliances, totaled around 510,000 in the first month, according to a government tally compiled through Saturday. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the eco-point program has helped to boost sales of flat-panel televisions and refrigerators.
