Feb 26Dressed to kill: Japan's ninja festival
To arrive in Iga-Ueno on the first Sunday in April is to feel like a stranger in ninjatown. This small city in the mountains, about two hours by train from Osaka, is supposedly the ancestral home of those fearsome feudal super-sneaks and master killers, whose name and reputation have spread across the world through movies, comic books and video games. Here in Japan, ninjas are now something of a national myth, a slightly cartoonish composite of old folk tales and modern pop culture. This morning in Iga Ueno, however, it would be discourteous to dispute their existence. It's the opening day of the annual ninja festival, and travel on public transport is free to anyone in costume. Feb 20Taking a train to the snows
Tumbling down head over heels near the summit of a 2,000-meter mountain is the most fun I've had in ages. On a Monday, the sparsely peopled ski runs at Mitsumata resort in Niigata Prefecture were knee-deep in feather-soft powder snow: perfect conditions for cushioning even the nastiest of falls. An amazingly cheap weekday JR package deal that included a day-return shinkansen trip from Tokyo Station and a one-day ski pass made this trip painful on neither the pocket nor the posterior. The only difficult thing about the experience was getting up at 5:15 a.m. in time for the 7:00 a.m. departure to Echigo-Yuzawa. (Japan Times)

Feb 13K-pop takes on the world while J-pop stays home
Last week, the Fuji TV newsmagazine "Mr. Sunday" looked at Korean pop's success in Japan from two angles. Taking a street-level perspective, the show's host, Seiji Miyane, hung out in Tokyo's Okubo district, which has become "the new Harajuku" because young Japanese women flock there to rub up against Korean culture. Miyane interviewed a group called KINO (K-pop IN Okubo), made up of young Korean men who learned Japanese and then came to Japan on their own to become stars. They don't have a management deal yet, but given the enthusiasm of the female fans who pack their small-venue shows, it's only a matter of time. (Japan Times)

Some Japanese teens are wearing cotton face masks, normally meant to prevent the spread of flu germs, so they can retreat from society, social analysts say. Wearing disposable face masks to prevent the spreading of germs is commonplace among Japanese commuters and office workers, particularly during the winter months. However, growing numbers of teenagers have taken to wearing the masks from the moment they wake until they go to bed, sparking fears they are using them to withdraw from society. (UPI)

It is broadcast live across the nation, and has been an imperial tradition since the 13th century. This year's topic was "leaves." (Canadian Press)

Dec 11Mad media coverage of Ebizo incident due to public's jealousy
The incredible media coverage of the fallout following the drunken brawl involving kabuki's "prince" Ebizo Ichikawa is due to the general public's jealousy of the star's fame, explains weekly tabloid Spa! (Dec. 14). To recap, on the night of November 25, an intoxicated Ebizo became engaged in a confrontation at a bar in Tokyo's Nishi Azabu district with an individual known to him. The 33-year-old star wound up receiving a thorough beating, which resulted in a bloodied face, chipped tooth, and broken left cheek. It was widely reported that Ebizo was out of control, exhibiting boisterous behavior that at one point included making members of his party drink tequila out of an ashtray. (Tokyo Reporter)

Dec 04Below the Belt: Chiba clinic chief coralled for coffee enemas
Seduction in Japan often starts with a male inviting a female to join him for a perfectly legal cup of java. But using coffee to purge patients' bowels has landed the operator of a defunct Chiba clinic and two other individuals in the pokey, Sankei Sports (Dec. 4) reports. When a 14-year-old middle school girl complaining of constipation came for a consultation, Chikayoshi Hishiki, age 55, arranged for her to be administered a coffee enema, which, he told her, would "clean out" her intestines. Nov 13Porn diplomacy? Actress Mariko Kawana, Japanese AV popular in North Korea (Tokyo Reporter)
Diplomatic relations between Japan and its Asian neighbors may now be at a post-World War II low, but, reports weekly tabloid Shukan Asahi Geino (Nov. 11), the popularity of Japanese AV is rising steadily in North Korea. On October 16, the Korean newspaper Chosen Nippo raised concerns about how widespread Japanese AV, that is, adult video, had become in its neighbor to the north. "Porn videos from overseas have high market value, especially those from Japan," explains a resident in a North Korean border town. "Their content may be illegal but the videos are very popular with young people." The tabloid wonders how a nation in which much of the population faces starvation can find an interest in AV, which is ultimately a mere recreation. "It is a fact that the ship Mangyonbon is used to transfer Japanese porn between the two countries," says professor Toshio Miyatsuka of Yamanashi Gakuin University, whose research focuses on North Korea.

Oct 09In Japan, healthy minds rejuvenate in healthy forests (Globe & Mail)
Many of us have been forest bathing before, we just didn't know it. Forest bathing is translated from the Japanese shinrin-yoku, which has been defined as "taking in the forest atmosphere." While the good, old-fashioned term "walk in the woods" still applies in North America, shinrin-yoku has slowly made its way into the vernacular in Japan since a government agency coined it in 1982. More recently, Japanese scientists have started quantifying the impact forest bathing, and its more clinical-sounding cousin, forest therapy (shinrin-ryoho), can have on humans.

Oct 02Tokyo film fest to feature 4 world premieres in competition, honor Bruce Lee (Tokyo Reporter)
The 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival will feature four world premieres in competition and pay tribute to martial arts film Bruce Lee with a special series to mark the 70th year of his birth. Fest chairman Tatsumi "Tom" Yoda said at a press luncheon on Thursday that this year will be a pivotal one for the event. "Our mission is to gather films that can convey the power of film," said Yoda at the conference, held at the Roppongi Hills complex in Tokyo's Minato Ward. "This is the jumping stage that will launch us into the future. The high-quality films at this event will be what drives us forward." Kicking off the event on October 23 is "The Social Network," the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the immensely popular social-working site Facebook. TIFF's week-long run will feature roughly 200 films at theaters in the Roppongi entertainment district and other areas. The closer will be Ben Affleck's "The Town," a bank-heist film set in Boston.
